Clawson Town’s newly elected mayor Mandy Price is the youngest in the town’s history. She was sworn in at the first meeting of the year on Jan. 14. Mayor Carrie Bloomer welcomed everyone to the meeting and took care of a few items of business. The council paid the bills and approved the minutes from the previous month. In the council reports, Gerry Hatch said that revenues from mineral lease money are down in the county, due to only one mine paying royalties and mining on federal land. Those funds are drying up. Johansen and Tuttle have plans underway for the new sewer system being planned to bring more Clawson residents onto the sewer system. The Castle Valley Special Service District has allocated funds to this project. Currently two or three different ways are being looked at to accomplish this project. It is Clawson’s job to go to the land owners that will be affected in allowing lines across their property. Clawson will obtain right-of-ways across these properties. The CVSSD will install the project. Gerry said hopefully in the next two years, the entire town will be under the sewer system.
Price reported that the county has waived the building permit fee for a new metal building and the town just needs to pick up the building permit from the new building inspector. Cameron Nerdin is the new building inspector in the county and it was reported he bought a house in Orangeville.
The town received a letter saying Wheeler Machinery will no longer sell agricultural equipment. But, anything under warranty will still be honored.
Sue Simmons is working on the Tree Utah project again and hopefully they will donate to new trees for Clawson again. The Arbor Day foundation is sponsoring an Arbor Day coloring contest for schools and she will make Ferron Elementary aware of the contest so local children can participate.
Mayor Bloomer reported the Utah Department of Transportation completed a study on SR-10 and they have determined there is no need for reduced speed limits through Clawson. There will be no change in the speed limits. Mayor Bloomer encouraged Mayor Price to still fight for the reduced speed limits for the safety of Clawson residents using SR-10 to exit into the town of Clawson.
An overdue water bill will go to court on Jan. 19. The resident owes the town considerable sums in past due water bills.
Mayor Bloomer concludes eight years of service to the town of Clawson during which time many positive changes have taken place.
The Christmas party was a success with a large crowd in attendance for the dinner and visit with Santa Claus. There are some left over funds from the new addition to the town hall. These funds will be used to outfit the building with new tables and chairs, microphones and other furnishings for the new room.
Hatch thanked Mayor Bloomer for her service to the town. “Carrie has really put her heart into this town. Things have grown and Clawson has come a long ways. My hat’s off to you,” said Hatch.
The next item of business was the swearing in of the new mayor Mandy Price and councilmember Dean Allen. Jerry Price, also a re-elected council member was unable to attend the meeting and will be sworn in at another time. The mayor and the council went over their responsibilities for the coming year. Gerry Hatch will remain in charge of animal control, roads and Castle Valley Special Service District. The mayor will be in charge of businesses, personnel, Four Corners and the office supervision. Everyone will help take care of the cemetery. Simmons will serve on the economic development council for the county, town hall and neighborhood watch. Dean Allen will be in charge of parks, planning and zoning and water. Jerry Price will serve on the recreation board.
The council discussed the rental of tables and chairs from the town hall. Borrowers will need to sign out the items and pay a deposit fee. If any items are damaged they will need to be replaced and the person would be charged for replacement costs and shipping.
The council set some dates for town celebrations for 2010. An Arbor Day celebration with tree planting will be on May 15, Aug. 21 will be the Harvest celebration, Halloween activity on Oct. 30 and the Christmas party will be on Dec. 13.
The next Clawson council meeting will be on Feb. 11 at 6 p.m.
