Lady Spartans defeat North Sevier and ALA

It was just what the doctor ordered. The Emery High Lady Spartans played twice at home and ended up with two blowouts as the team finally played well as a team. Emery defeated North Sevier by 44 points on Tuesday night and defeated ALA by 60 points on Thursday night. Final scores in those games were 79-35 and 85-25.
Neither team had an answer for Emery’s Taylor Mann. Mann, in less than three quarters of play in each game, scored 24 points against ALA and 23 points against North Sevier. Mann also pulled down eight rebounds in each game and added six blocked shots in the two games.
Against ALA, Mann scored 11 points in the first quarter while sophomore Blayr Jeffs scored 10 points as she made four baskets including a pair of three’s. In the second period, Mann scored six points of six straight made free throws while fellow post player Brooke Jensen scored 10 points.
Mann scored seven more points in the third quarter before leaving the game.
After the game Coach Steven Gordon talked to the players, “Good game, good job. The most important thing was that you played hard tonight. You got after them.” During the game it showed that the team was not just content with winning, they wanted to play well in doing so.
In the game, Jeffs finished with 20 points, Jensen scored 16 points, Kim Oldroyd scored 10 points, Tayler Jewkes scored eight points, Jessica Murray, Jeridi Price and Laurel Roundy each scored two points and Shailee Stokes scored one point. Emery made 16 of 17 free throws in the game.
Against North Sevier, Emery started fast as they were up 8-0, allowed North Sevier to score five points and then finished the quarter on a 12-2 run. Six different Spartans scored in the quarter. Emery led 20-7 after the first quarter.
Emery won the second quarter 22-8 and led at the half 42-15. Mann scored eight points in the second quarter and 12 points in the half. In balanced scoring, Jeffs scored eight points in the half while Jewkes, Jensen and Whitney Roper scored six points each. Price scored three points.
Emery took the advantage to 63-17 in the third quarter with substitutions then taking place. Mann added another 10 points in the third before leaving the game. Jeffs hit a pair of threes in the quarter to end the game with 14 points. Roper hit a 3-point shot in each quarter to finish with 12 points. Price scored seven points in the fourth quarter and finished the game with 11 points. Jensen scored eight points, Jewkes scored three points and Murray scored three points. Oldroyd made a basket in the fourth quarter.
Emery played Juan Diego in a make-up game Dec. 21, at Juan Diego and will next play at Carbon on Jan. 4, 2011.
