Emery All Star Wrestlers Take State
The spotlight cut through the smoke to follow the wrestlers that had made it all the way through the bracket to the championship round. Three Emery All Star wrestlers David Bird, Chad Collard and McKoy Christiansen, made their way through the smoke and into the spotlight to compete for a state championship. A total of 15 junior high and middle school wrestlers from Emery County traveled to Richfield the weekend of Jan. 27 and 28 to compete in the 1A, 2A, and 3A Jr. High/Middle School state. Wrestling started on Friday night and continued all day Saturday in a double elimination tournament with wrestlers from junior high and middle school programs affiliated with 1-3A high schools from all over the state. The competition was talented and tough. The team represented Emery County very successfully with seven medalists. Chad Collard took first place in his weight bracket as well as McKoy Christiansen. David Bird was injured at the end of his final championship round, finishing in second place. Jared Shakespaere and Tuckett Allred finished fourth. Hans Guymon finished fifth and Logen Ewell was sixth. The team is led by coaches Kirk Christiansen, Bruce Mangum, Rick Bird and Chris Collard.
