Local Teenager qualifies for National High School Rodeo Finals
Seventeen year old Teigan Adams of Castle Dale, finished third in barrel racing at the Utah State High School Finals held June 8-11 in Heber City. In her bid to qualify Teigan attended high school rodeos throughout the state of Utah from August of last year to the end of May, she earned enough points to enter the state finals tied for third place in barrel racing.
A second place win in the first go-round moved her solidly into third when the person she was tied with failed to place. Her second run she finished 11th in the round. She entered the Saturday night short go which only the top 10 contestants compete in in third place. A run of 16.4 earned her third place in the short go and cinched her third place in the average. The combined points put her in third place qualifying her for a trip to the National High School Rodeo Finals in Gillette, Wyo. The competition will be held July 17-July 24.
Featuring more than 1,500 contestants from 41 states, five Canadian Provinces, and Australia, the National High School Finals is the world’s largest rodeo. In addition to competing for more than $200,000 in prizes, NHSFR contestants will also be competing for more than $350,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named the National High School Rodeo National Champion. To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20 after two go-rounds of intense competition before advancing to Saturday night’s final championship performance.

Teigan competes as a junior attending Utah Virtual Academy. She rodeos as part of the Emery High School Rodeo Club. Emery held their high school rodeo in April in conjunction with the Carbon High School rodeo. While competing at the Carbon High School rodeo which was held in Castle Dale Teigan reset the arena record fast time in barrel racing.
Teigan competed on three different horses to earn the points to carry her into state. She competed on her horses Sparky Smokes Sooner (Sparky) Jokers Trouble Bars (Joker) and WM Smoke on Water (Puddles). She elected to ride Puddles, her 5 year old futurity colt, during the State Finals. She felt he was mature enough for the job because she had been winning in futurities throughout the state of Utah during the spring.
Teigan also qualified for state in the pole bending. She competed on Sparky and had a fourth place win in the first round.
Teigan is the daughter of Gary and Amy Adams. She gives a big thanks to everyone that has helped make this trip possible.
