Festive Friday Returns
USU Extension will hold the first Festive Friday event on Oct. 14. Mark Your Calendars and plan to attend.Please RSVP. Our special guest speaker is Shandra from Deals to Meals. Master Club
Master Club is starting up again on Wednesday nights at First Baptist Church in Ferron from 7-8:15 p.m. Sing songs, play games, earn badges, learn practical skills, be surprised by what you find in the Treasure Chest–all during a Bible centered evening of activity. Broncs and Bulls An All Roughstock Rodeo
Presented by Will Payne, in partnership with Rocking B Rodeos and Rockin’N Bucking Bulls Sept. 24 at the Huntington Fairgrounds, 4:30 -6 p.m. kids rodeo: stick horse barrels, mutton bustin’, Jr. barrels, calf riding, mini bulls (call to enter mini bulls). 7 p.m. Bareback riding, saddlebronc riding, bulls, chicken chase, cash calf, hide race, donkey roping, wild cow milking. Rock Art Photo Exhibit at Musuem of the San Rafael
A rock art photo exhibit (including pictures of local rock art) will be on display at the Museum of the San Rafael from Sept. 1-30. Museum hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Red Cross Liaison to Visit
Chris Gravett, Red Cross liaison for our area will be presenting the Sheltering training on Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. The training is two hours in length and will certify people to operate a shelter (in a school) during a disaster or emergency where people are displaced from their homes. Anyone who would like to attend can contact the sheriff’s office at 381-2404 to sign up.

The Emery County School District will conduct speech and hearing screenings to identify students who might need further evaluation of their speech or hearing. Students who fail the initial hearing screening will be given a re-test in three to four weeks. Screening is scheduled with the schools involved and takes place anytime during the school year. District Speech-Language Pathologists administer the tests. All district preschool, kindergarten, first grade, new students and any referrals will be screened for hearing. Pre-kindergarten students will be screened during kindergarten registration and third grade students will be screened for speech only. Parents must tell your school’s secretary if you do not want your child to receive speech or hearing screening tests.

$1,000 Prize Offered In Poetry Contest
A $1,000 grand prize is being offered to the last poet standing in a contest sponsored by Rainbow Poets.
Poems of 21 lines or fewer on any subject and in any style will be judeged by the contest director Michael Thomas. “We love encouraging youth in the arts,” he says. “We trust this contest will result in poetic surprises!”
The contest is free to enter and ipen to poets of any age. Fifty prizes totaling more than $5,000 will be awarded.

Those sending entries should include their name and address on the same page as the poem. For a winner’s list please enclose a stamped return envelope.

BLM Seeks Nominations to Resource Advisory Council
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Utah is seeking public nominations for one (1) open position on its Utah Resource Advisory Council. The nominee will fill a vacated position with the term expiring in Sept. 2012. The BLM will consider the nominations until Sept. 15, 2011.
The RAC position open is in the following category: Category Two – Representatives of nationally or regionally recognized environmental organizations. The BLM’s Resource Advisory Councils (RACs), composed of citizens chosen for their expertise in natural resource issues, help the Bureau carry out its stewardship of 245 million acres of public lands. The Bureau, which manages more land than any other Federal agency, has 24 RACs across the West, where most BLM-managed land is located. Each RAC consists of 12 to 15 members with an interest in public land management, including such individuals as conservationists, ranchers, outdoor recreationists, state and local government officials, Tribal officials, and academics. The diverse membership of each RAC is aimed at achieving a balanced outlook that the BLM needs for its mission, which is to manage the public lands for multiple uses. Individuals may nominate themselves or others. Nominees must be residents of Utah. The BLM will evaluate nominees based on their education, training, experience, and knowledge of the geographical area. Nominees should demonstrate a commitment to collaborative resource decision making. The Obama Administration prohibits individuals who are currently federally registered lobbyists to serve on all FACA and non-FACA boards, committees, or councils. ACT Achievement test Registration
Registration is now open for the Oct. 22 ACT achievement test. Students who wish to take the college admission and placement exam must register before Sept. 16.
The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam. It tests what students have actually learned in school, not their aptitude for learning. The ACT also measures what students need to know to be ready for first year credit-bearing college courses based on ACT College Readiness Standards
