The 2012 Emery High softball season started after just six short days of tryouts and practice. Although the team seemed tentative at first, it didn’t take long for the bats to come alive and Emery opened the season with a 7-2 win over the Carbon Dinos.
The Spartans defeated the Delta Rabbits the next day 6-1 and then closed out a busy week by traveling to North Sanpete. Playing on fields in Moroni instead of at the school due to snow still on the ground, Emery lost 9-4 against North Sanpete.
Emery defeated Carbon behind junior Jeridi Price on the mound. Carbon scattered seven hits over seven innings and the Dinos scored just single runs in the fourth and seventh innings.
Emery, after just getting a single runner on base in the first two innings, scored three runs in the third inning. Hailey Cloward walked to lead off the inning; Bryton Hess walked two batters later followed by another walk to Price. With the bases loaded, Jaiden Huntington singled and picked up two RBI’s. Haylee Beckstead singled to drive in another run and Emery led 3-0.
In the fourth inning, Shandee Jewkes singled to right, Brittany Payne walked and Hess walked again to load the bases. Auminee Bennett ground out to the third baseman but she picked up an RBI in doing so. The next batter flew out to end the inning.
In the fifth inning, Emery scored their final three runs. Huntington got on base due to an error and Beckstead followed with a single to left field. Kaitlyn Thomson singled to left driving in the first run. Jewkes got on base due to another Dino error with two more runs scoring.
Against Delta, senior Whitney Roper took the mound and gave up a single run on five hits as the team went errorless behind her. Roper got the Rabbits out one-two-three in five of the seven innings.
Emery scored three runs in the first inning, runs in the third inning and a single run in the fifth inning. In the first inning, Jo Jennings singled to left, Price got hit by a pitch and Jaiden Huntington followed with a homerun over the centerfield fence.
In the third inning, Jennings bunted herself on base, Price was hit by a pitch and both scored on an error committed by the third baseman. In the fifth inning, Price got on base again and scored on a single by Roper.
At North Sanpete, Emery scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning and the seventh inning but gave up four runs in the fifth inning and five runs in the sixth inning as the Hawks came out on top.
Two North Sanpete hits and three Emery errors helped score the runs in the fifth inning while an error; two walks and three extra base hits scored the runs in the sixth inning. North Sanpete had a single base hit through the first four innings.
Emery’s first two runs came in the fourth inning. Price walked and Huntington hit another homerun to score both. In the seventh inning, Jewkes got on base due to an error followed by Hess hitting a homerun to left field. Roper had a triple in the game but did not score.
Emery’s busy preseason continues this week with a single game at Carbon followed by playing in a tournament in St. George this weekend.
