With a victory over Monticello on Saturday, the Emery Spartan baseball team evened its record for the week after having lost at Grand on Tuesday. The score at Grand was 11-10 for Grand and Emery defeated Monticello 10-0.
Emery had their opportunities against Grand to win the game but it just didn’t happen. Emery had 11 batters get on base that did not score. Emery had 14 base hits in the game plus they picked up six walks but it just wasn’t enough to win the game as they committed nine errors in the field to aid Grand in their offensive output. Grand did their best though to be just as generous as they committed eight errors.
Emery scored two runs in the top of the first inning only to see Grand score three times in the bottom of the first. Grand scored three more times in the second inning to extend their lead to 6-2. After a scoreless third inning by both teams, Emery scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning to grab the lead back at 8-6.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Grand scored four times to regain the lead at 10-8. Emery scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to tie the score. Grand added a lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning in what proved to be the winning run.
In the first inning, Ridge Nielson led off with a single and Tappan Draper doubled to score a run. Geren Payne hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield and Emery had two runs.
In the fourth inning, after the first Emery batter got out, Curtis Mason walked, Hunter Huntington walked, and Dillon Wilstead singled. Nielson then got hit by a pitch, Draper doubled, Payne tripled and Brandon Oliver singled followed by Kaden Feichko singling as the Spartans scored six times.
In the fifth inning, Mason walked, Huntington singled and both would later score. Nielson had another single in the inning.
Against Monticello, the game only went five innings as the Spartans scored at least once in the four innings that they batted and the Emery defense only allowed three base hits in the game and committed just a single error. Geren Payne started on the mound but only pitched the first two innings as Jordan Cox pitched two innings and Hunter Huntington pitiched one inning.
In the first inning, Draper singled followed by a double by Payne and Emery had a run. In the second inning, Colton Collard walked, Cox singled and Curtis Mason then hit a home run. Nielson followed with a single as did Payne and Feichko and Emery had five runs.
In the third inning, Cox singled and Mason walked. Both advanced two bases on a Draper double with Cox scoring and Mason then scored on an error by the Monticello catcher.
In Emery’s last at bat in the fourth inning, McKoy Allred started Emery off by getting hit by a pitch. Collard then singled, Mason walked, Nielson singled and Draper then got hit by a pitch as the Spartans scored their final two runs before the game was called.
Emery hosts South Sevier on Tuesday and then travels to Price to play Carbon on Wednesday.
