A Brush With Kindness program helps Elmo residents. J. Leo and Sue Ferran of Elmo were distraught when their trailer roof began leaking earlier this summer, bringing water into their bedroom. They contacted Habitat for Humanity of Castle Country to inquire about A Brush with Kindness, a program that provides the upfront costs and labor for critical home repairs paid back through affordable, zero-interest loans. Katie Anderson from A Brush with Kindness said, “We were able to help by patching numerous holes in the roof and applying a protective roof coating, all done within six hours. The roof repair was immediately tested by a rainstorm 30 minutes after completion. At the conclusion of the storm, there was no evidence of the roof leaking.”
The Ferrans said they “are better off with our place because our roof was taken care of. No more water leaks inside so far.”
Anderson said, “We would like to thank the Sorenson Legacy Foundation, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, AmeriCorps, Wells Fargo, and the Union Pacific Foundation for their support. Without the support from these sponsors and donations from local residents and vendors, HFHCC would not be able to help people in need of repairs like the Ferrans.
Katie Anderson was the volunteer who completed the roof repair for the Ferran family.
Habitat for Humanity of Castle Country developed the program called A Brush with Kindness which focuses on minor exterior home repairs to improve quality of life, durability, energy efficiency, and/or accessibility. ABWK aims to improve circumstances for moderate to low income and elderly homeowners in all of Carbon and Emery counties. The projects are low cost and are repaid through a no interest revolving loan fund. Habitat relies on volunteer participation which strengthens the community. The main goal of the Brush with Kindness program is to eliminate all safety issues within the homes of qualified homeowners in Castle Country.
Projects performed include: exterior painting/siding, minor roofing repairs, stair/ramp accessibility, handrail installation, grab bar installation, door/window replacement and landscaping.
Habitat is a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization to which cash and in-kind donations are tax-deductible. Donations may be made by mailing checks payable to “HFHCC” to PO Box 724, Price, UT 84501.
