"Austin Allred scores for Emery."

By GARY ARRINGTON Sports Writer

Summit Academy scored their first touchdown of the game last Friday night with just 46 seconds gone on the clock as the 2015 high school football season opened with games across the state. The Emery Spartans were hosting last season’s 2-A runner-up in the Summit Academy Bears, the team that defeated the Spartans in last season’s opener in Bluffdale.
This year was not last year and after that initial score, Emery outscored the Bears 57-37 the rest of the ball game and won the shootout by the score of 57-44. Emery responded one minute and eight seconds later with their own touchdown, a 54 yard run by senior running back Austin Allred, and the scoring spree was on.
After the Emery kick-off, the Bears next series saw them lose five yards on the first play and then Allred intercepted the Bear pass on the next play and Emery had a first and ten at the Bear 24-yard line. Senior running back Bryce Dugmore scored four plays later on a 6-yard run. Kicker Ashton Dieli added 2 points on a run after having kicked the first extra point and Emery led 15-7.
Allred ran the ball 15 times in the first half and gained 222 yards and scored three touchdowns. Allred finished the game with 22 carries and 249 yards. Dugmore carried the ball 19 times in the game and finished with 166 yards gained and Bryce scored four touchdowns. Dieli ran the ball 11 times and gained 66 yards and Kacey Jones carried the ball six times and gained 33 yards.
The Emery running backs gained 515 yards rushing and on just four occasions did they lose yardage on a play.
Emery’s quarterback Zach Jorgensen completed six of 10 passes for 95 yards and a single touchdown. Jorgensen completed his last five attempts and several of the others should have been caught. Emery had 610 yards of offense in the game. The touchdown went to Kolton Butler and covered 48 yards.
A team does not gain 600 yards without possessing blockers and this Emery line did a great job. The Spartans line consists of center Ty Mecham, guards Logan Labrum and Kobe Butler, tackles Kyler Stilson and Taigon Pulli and ends Kolton Butler and TJ Lacock.
The first quarter last Friday night may have been the longest first quarter I have ever seen. After the original three scores already mentioned, Summit Academy scored on their next two possessions to regain the lead at 19-13 after both extra point attempts were no good.
Emery took the lead back at 22-19 as Allred scored on a 49-yard run and Dieli’s kick was good. Summit Academy then returned the kick-off for a touchdown to retake the lead at 22-25 as again the 2-point attempt was no good. This scored ended the first quarter.
Emery added two more touchdowns in the second period while holding the Bears scoreless in the period. Allred scored on a 13-yard run and Dugmore scored on a 3-yard run and Dieli kicked both extra points and Emery led 36-25 at the half.
The Bears punted in each of their second quarter possessions and gained just 22 yards in three possessions. In the second half, Emery scored on their first possession of the second half as they received the kick-off, marched down the field 85 yards and scored on a 1-yard run by Dugmore. This was Emery’s only score of the quarter. Summit Academy also added a score in the third quarter and the period ended with Emery leading 43-31.
Both teams scored twice in the final period to get to the final score of 57-44.
Emery’s scores came on a 48-yard pass play from Jorgenson to Butler and on 41-yard run by Dugmore. Emery won the fourth period 14-13 as Dieli added two more extra points. Kyler Stilson recovered a Bear fumble in the period.
Emery will now host Canyon View this Friday night at 7 pm.
