Just Stuff

By Gary Arrington

Netflix is a wonderful thing. It is something new in my household, at least it is something new in the fact that we actually use it. I stumbled upon it thanks to my grandkids. Grandkids are wonderful that way in the fact they know how to make everything work.
Netflix had been available in my house but I could never see the purpose of watching shows that I never watched in the first place. There was too much on satellite TV every day to worry about going back and watching shows I never watched before.
Netflix allows you to watch shows without the commercial interruption and it goes from one episode to another with almost no break, it makes life easy.
Grandkids also make you watch shows that you had no interest in watching before, shows that you had previously thought of as being dumb, stupid, a waste of time or something like that.
So what show do you think they stopped on, I could make you guess but you probably never would so I will tell you. It is called The Walking Dead, that is right, a show that involves zombies. I know what you are thinking here and I probably would have thought the same thing not too long ago. Why would anybody watch a show about dead people coming back to life with the apparent reason for their existence to be to kill all living things.
But even though that is what the show is about, that is not really what the show is about. The show is about strangers and how they act and react in a crisis. This show is about how one would react when life all around them is going to hell.
I’m not sure that I can put that last word in the column but that is up to the editor to decide, not me. You get sucked into the personal interactions of each character and how each reacts when one crisis after another keeps coming up. There is never a time that one can get to comfortable because there is another dead person just around the next corner or behind the next tree. Relaxation does not exist. It makes one wonder how each of us would respond, not to the walking dead, but to real life crisis. Would we stand up and fight or would we lay down and die? Would we work to overcome or would we be against everything? Would we be negative or positive? We handle the every day but could we handle the extra? Do we trust those around us?
This show is about different people from different backgrounds with different outlooks surviving today based on trusting each other, how would you do in a crisis?
