In the late evening on Nov. 24 2016, Marius James (Jim) Atwood peacefully passed from this life and into the next. Jim spent his last Thanksgiving doing what he did best, loving each and every one he met.
Jim was born on January 11th 1935 in Elmo, Utah to James Leo Atwood and Rosetta Eliza Mills. Throughout his life Jim enjoyed three wonderful marriages where he was loved and spoiled by three marvelous women. On June 25, 1952 Jim was sealed to his high school sweetheart Doris Ileen Nelson (deceased) in the Salt Lake City LDS temple. After Doris’s passing, Jim married Sally Dawn Brinkerhoff Staker (deceased) on Jan. 7, 1989. On Aug. 18, 2001, Jim again expanded his circle of love when he was sealed to Marsha Kay Worthen in the Manti temple.
From an early age, Jim learned the value of hard work. Whether it was working on his farm, driving cattle, running a dairy, or managing a mine, Jim Atwood embodied work ethic and was tireless in providing for his family.
Jim’s laughter and sense of humor was contagious. From practical jokes, embellished stories, and colorful antics, Jim would leave the room smiling and light.
Jim loved everyone unconditionally. As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many positions and callings including a mission to Orlando, Florida with his wife Marsha. Jim looked past faults and failures to always see an individual’s truth worth. You could not help feeling loved, cherished, special, and valued when you were around Jim. He inspired those he met to be better, live happier, and love more.
Jim is survived by his loving wife Marsha and son William (Kym) Bryner; wife Doris’s children: Claudia ‘deceased’ (Gale) Grange, Wendy (Terry) Gregson, Chris Ann (Todd) Pace, Kelly Gwen (Ted) Luke, and Natalie Lynn Gardner (Jay Mark) Humphrey; and wife Sally’s children: Deborah (Dennis) Jones, Allen (Debbie) Staker, Sandy (Jim) Behling, Shelly (Doug) Pottenger, and Kristi (Kirt) Rasmussen. Jim’s posterity includes 59 grandchildren, 105 great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren. Jim is also survived by his sisters Anna Bell Rosalie Cox, Ledonna Hall; and brother Marvis Ladell Atwood.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Laura Deanne Atwood, daughter Claudia Lee Grange and son-in-law Darrell Gardner.
Although Jim is now gone, his memory and example lives on. His light shines in each person he touched during his full, vibrant life.
We love you Jim. We miss you dearly. Now that you are gone, our world is a little dimmer; however, heaven is bright and now home to “the best looking man around”.
