After niceness cost them a match at home against Uintah, the Emery High Lady Spartans traveled to Ogden for the Weber Volleyball Tournament and tied for first place in victories. In the 10-team tournament, the Spartans finished with a 7-2 record.
In the opener, Emery defeated Jordan 25-12 and 25-16. Camille Fehlberg and Ashley Hansen served as 15 points were scored in the opener and Natalee Hanson was serving for six of the points in the closer.
Emery then defeated Box Elder 23-25, 25-15, 15-13. Shaylie Huntington, Natalee and Camille were the servers in this match that scored the most points.
The next match for Emery was against Delta and Emery prevailed 25-17 and 25-18. Natalee and Camille again lead the serving.
Emery closed out the day with their first loss as the Riverton Wolverines prevailed 26-24 and 25-18. Emery played well in the match but the 5-A school was simply too consistent for the Spartans. Riverton also finished the tourney with a 7-2 record and took first overall because of this victory.
On Saturday, Emery defeated Ogden 25-18, 25-7 in the morning followed by a three set win over Hillcrest. The scores were 25-21, 18-25 and 15-8. Kassie Allred served for 11 points in the opening game with Ogden and Emery simply dominated the second game. Against Hillcrest, it was Ashley’s turn again to be the leading server.
Emery defeated 5-A Copper Hills 25-16, 15-25, 15-10 and West 25-8, 25-22 in the afternoon and lost a heartbreaker to Weber 25-12, 19-25 and 11-15. Camille served 10 straight points in the game that was won over Weber as Emery dominated this game.
Head Coach Ferd Allred talked about his stay in Ogden, “I was pleased with the way we played at the tournament. We tied for first but more importantly we played well most of the time. We played as a team and these girls have fun playing together.”
In the opener of the season, Emery lost at home to Uintah. Emery won the first game 25-20, won the second game 25-19 and was leading the third game 9-5 when the team appeared to relax. Uintah went up 16-13 and then won the game 25-22. They finished off the Spartans with two more wins at 25-21 and 15-5.
Again Coach Allred talked about his team, “We relaxed after going up two games. Those two wins came pretty easy and we were up the third game when we lost our composure, our meanness and the match. We are really good when we stay focused, but against Uintah we lost that. I hope we learned from that.”
