Angelo Basso
PRICE – Angelo “Ang” Basso, age 78, passed away May 29, 2003 in Price after a long illness.
Born Dec. 1, 1924 in Price to Sam and Josephine Fiorello Basso. Married LuGene Brady Aug. 25, 1945 in Reno, Nev. She died Feb. 25, 1983.
Longtime resident of Carbon County, where he worked for Royal Coal Company, and later retired from Carbon County School District where he was a custodian at Ann Self Center and Castle Heights Elementary for many years. Served in the U.S. Army.
“Ang” enjoyed camping with his family, golfing and he especially loved his bowling. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and caring for his yard which everyone enjoyed.
Survived by son, Angelo (Shelley) Basso, Jr., Helper; daughter, Angene (Scott) Davidson, South Jordan; four brothers and two sisters, Mary Christensen, Eleanor Haycock, Frank and James Basso, all of Price; Albert and Henry Basso, both of Midvale; seven loving grandchildren, many loving great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews who affectionately called him, “Uncle Ang.” Preceded in death by parents; wife, LuGene; son, Ronald D. Basso; granddaughter, Amanda Basso Mueller; and four brothers, Ray, Joe, Armond and Fred Basso.
Funeral service June 3, 11 a.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday one hour prior to services. Interment, Price City Cemetery.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Debbie and the staff at Rocky Mountain Hospice for the kind and gentle care they showed to our dad.
Klell Mecham
EAST CARBON – Klell Merkley Mecham, age 79, passed away May 29, 2003 at his home.
Born June 5, 1923 in Duchesne, to Clarence Elmer and Gladys E. Alura Mecham. Married Fern Jones in 1960 in Salt Lake City.
Klell was proud to be a veteran and he honorable served his country during World War II, as well as serving one other tour of duty with the U.S. Army. He was a resident of East Carbon for 30 years, where he was a retired member of the UMWA, Horse Canyon Local 8003. He enjoyed the outdoors and just being an all around cowboy. Klell had a great love and appreciation for fast cars and going rock hunting with Fern on the desert. He will be dearly missed by his family and many longtime friends.
Survived by loving wife, Fern Mecham, East Carbon; mother, Gladys Mecham, Mesa, Ariz. two daughters and four sons, Myrna (Ben) Mead, Wellington; Thayde (Carol) Jones, East Carbon; Ravenna (Hal) Firth, Spanish Fork; Randy Jones, Kyle Jones, both of Wellington; Reggie (Kathy) Jones, Price; brothers, Doyle Mecham, Mesa, Ariz.; Glenn Mecham, Salt Lake City; sister, Colleen Odekirk, Nevada; 24 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren and two and one half great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by father and brother.
Graveside service were held June 2, at Cleveland City Cemetery.
Jeremiah Johnson
CASTLE DALE-Our beloved husband, father, son, brother, officer and friend Jeremiah Kirk Johnson died May 27, 2003 in a traffic accident on duty for the Emery County Sheriff’s Office. He was born July 1, 1972 in Rexburg, Idaho to Randy G. and Elizabeth “Betsy” Kirk Johnson. He married Lisa Marie Simons in the Manti Temple on Dec. 16, 1995.
Jeremiah was a 1990 graduate of Emery High School, and received his associate’s degree from the College of Eastern Utah. He was a faithful member of the LDS Church and served an honorable mission to the Guayaquil Ecuador North Mission. He loved his family, and anything that had to do with the sea. He was a WW II history buff, an expert marksman, enjoyed camping in Yellowstone with his family and was an avid reader. He has been a deputy sheriff with the Emery County Sheriff’s Office for over six years.
He is survived by his wife Lisa and children Trevor (5), Noah (3), and Sydney (1) all of Castle Dale. Also his parents Randy and Betsy Johnson, and his wife’s parents Morris and Luan Simons of Spanish Fork, his brothers and sisters Jennifer (Ronald) Jensen, Jessica (Conrad) Anderson, Joshua Johnson all of Castle Dale, Jacob Johnson and Janelle Johnson both of Washington D.C., and his grandparents Tedd and Betty Johnson of Preston, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents.
A visitation was held on May 30 at the Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale. Funeral services were held at the Castle Dale Stake Center on May 31. Interment followed in the Castle Dale Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary, Castle Dale.
Violet Chidester
PRICE – Our mother and grandmother, Violet Ellen Jackson Chidester, age 89, passed away June 1, 2003 at the Curtis Retirement Home in Glenwood of natural causes.
She was born May 17, 1914, in Lehi, to John and Victoria Colledge Jackson. Married Loren E. Chidester April 7, 1933 in Spanish Fork. Marriage later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. They were together for 59 years before Loren’s passing Dec. 25, 1992.
In her younger years she enjoyed hunting and fishing. She enjoyed making quilts and crocheting, all her family and friends benefitted from her handiwork. She was a very outgoing person and liked being around family and friends.
Survived by two daughters, Jean Imig, Monroe; Doris Trease, Scofield; Faye Lamb, Price; brother, Ronald Jackson, Portland, Ore.; 14 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents; husband, Loren; son, Jack Chidester; sons-in-law, Paul Imig and Bud Trease; three grandchildren, Michael and Lorry Wright; infant granddaughter, Imig; and six brothers and two sisters.
Funeral service will be held June 7, 1 p.m. Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Saturday one hour prior to services. Friends are welcome at Mitchell’s daily. Interment, Price City Cemetery.
Jessie Ann Rasmussen Holdaway
PRICE-Jessie Ann Rasmussen Holdaway, age 87, passed away peacefully May 24, 2003, of natural causes at the home of her son surrounded by loved ones. She was born Jan. 23, 1916, in Price to Lawrence M. and Mary Jane Olsen Rasmussen. She married Harold E. Holdaway and was later divorced.
An avid reader, storyteller and writer, Jessie’s work had been published in journals, historical documents and newspapers throughout the West. She could entertain young and old alike reciting the events that unfolded in her life and the lives of her dear family. She was blessed with a rich heritage and loved her hometown of Price, by whom she will be deeply missed.
As a young woman, she fulfilled a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the New England states. Her church service continued throughout her entire life blessing the lives of many. Jessie was involved in her community and was best known for her service as the Carbon County Treasurer for two decades, retiring at age 79. She was an incredible mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, truly loved by all. She was a perfect example of selfless service, generosity, creativity, with a witty sense of humor. She was a true joy to know and love.
Survived by her son and daughter-in-law Richard and Maureen Holdaway; grandchildren, Laurie and Christopher Meacham, Kristin and Ben Francis, David and Jessica Holdaway, Brian and Jessica K. Holdaway and Mark Holdaway; great-granchildren, Jordan and Jemma Mecham, Hayley and Alyssa Francis and Jackson Holdaway; sister and brother-in-law Jane Marie and Jack Cook; sister-in-law Norma Rasmussen; brother-in-law Paul Naturale. Preceded in death by her brothers Arthur and Morris Rasmussen; sisters Beverly Holbrook and Barbara Naturale; her son Jon Reagan Holdaway and daughter Jessie Lynn Holdaway.
Funeral services were held May 31 in the Price Second Ward Chapel. Interment was in the Price City Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary. WE LOVE YOU GRANDMA JESSIE!
Desaray Lynne Wingo
Desaray Lynne Wingo, of Sapulpa, Okla. was born Oct. 29, 1982 in Phoenix, Ariz. She died May 22, 2003 in Sapulpa.
She leaves behind her mother Tuesday Wingo; brother Travis Fair; grandfather Fred Wingo; grandparents Michel and Gray Lawson; uncles Richard Eugene Wingo, Richard Edward Wingo, Ronald Wingo and Janice; aunt Judy Wingo; cousins Travis Wingo, Mark Wingo, Beth Morgan, Dirk Wingo and Cindy Pyle; best friend Crystal Alton and family of Orangeville.
Desaray attended Sapulpa High school and worked for the Western Sizzlin in Sand Springs, Okla. for the past year.
Funeral services were held May 28 in the Green Hill Memorial Gardens under the direction of the Smith Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. John Hall officiated. Interment followed in the Green Hill Memorial Gardens.
Serving as casketbearers were Harold Rice, Duane Evans, John Crawford, Jack Garland Timothy Wingo, Stewart Robertson, Greg Gilliam and the Rev. John Hall.

Clyde Mortensen
“Bless Your Heart”
EMERY-Clyde Ervin Mortensen, age 93, passed away May 27, 2003, of natural causes. He was born to George Q. and Carrie Mortensen on Oct. 1. 1909 in Emery. He married his hometown sweetheart Jenel Hansen, July 17, 1929 in the Manti Temple. She passed away and Clyde later married Stella McKenney who also preceded him in death.
Clyde served the Emery community as a farmer and cattleman and he worked in the coal mine. He served on the Emery Canal Board for 50 years and served as the Water Master for many years.
Clyde was a member of the LDS Church, he loved working with the youth in Mutual and the Sunday School program. He took great pride being a Home Teacher and a High Priest. He loved the outdoors, especially his cabins in Nine Mile Canyon along with his family.
Survived by his two daughters, Geraldine (Morris) Lewis and Beth (Fred) Delliskave, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wives Jenel and Stella and a daughter Belva Jean.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff at Emery County Nursing Rehab Center for the care extended to Clyde.
Graveside services will be June 3 at the Emery City Cemetery at 1 p.m. under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Calvin Franklin Pace
PRICE-Our special brother, uncle, and friend Calvin Franklin Pace, 54 passed away suddenly at his home in Price on May 28, 2003. He was born March 6, 1949 in Salt Lake City to Russell D. and Evelyn Foster Pace. He served in the U.S. Army during Viet Nam and later worked at the power plant. Cal was a painter most of his life and was a member of the Painters Union just like his father was. He was a loving person with a gentle personality and will be greatly missed by family and especially friends from the apartment, and Four Corners’s who were always there for him.
Cal is lovingly survived by three sisters and one brother: Kim (Mark) Nelson of Boulder; Kathie (Jerry) Anderson of Elmo; Kristi (Jimmie) Snyder of Huntington; and Cliff Pace of Grand Junction, Colo. He will also be missed very much by his many nieces and nephews and friends.
A visitation was held June 2 at Fausett Mortuary in Price. Gravesides services followed at the Elmo Cemetery where he was buried next to his parents who both passed away last year.
Anna Swasey
HUNTINGTON – Anna Isobel Clark Carleton Swasey, age 91, passed away May 28, 2003 in Ferron.
She was born Feb. 14, 1912 in Mabel, Ga. to Francis Marion and Henerietta Louisa Westervelt Clark. Married Clarence Cecil Carleton Dec. 23, 1934. He passed away July 9, 1938. She later married Royal Swasey Jr. Oct. 20, 1945 in Jacksonville, Fla., later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple March 4, 1967. He passed away Aug. 22, 1999.
As an active member of the LDS Church, she served faithfully as a missionary with her husband in the California, Fresno Mission, and in the Primary MIA and relief society organizations. Ann began a nursing career in Florida and later in the Carbon Hospital, spanning over 40 years, having touched many lives. As an avid gardener she suppled the neighborhood with vegetables and she enjoyed raising beautiful flowers.
After the death of her mother she helped raise her two younger sisters and became a very good homemaker. She had the best fried chicken in the world. The joy in her life came from caring for others.
She is survived by children, Newton and Ella Carleton, Enoch; Marian and Gary Bowie, Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada; Annette and Chall Cook, Huntington; Frances Swasey, Huntington; Wayne and Earlene Swasey, Taylorsville; Beverly and David Fryer, East Carbon; 27 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren; special niece, Judy and Jim Martin, Huntington; and one sister, Alice Chauncey, Georgia; and numerous other nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by son, Cecil Carleton.
Funeral services were held June 2, in the Ferron LDS Stake Center. Burial was in the Ferron Cemetery.
Richard Snowball
ELMO-Richard Peart Snowball, age 66, passed away May 30, 2003, while battling complications brought on by his old adversary, Rheumatoid Arthritis. Born Feb. 24, 1937, in Riverside, Calif. to Peart M. and Nalda Burke Snowball; married Patricia L. Snowball, June 16, 1961 in Los Angeles, Calif.
Richard was a farmer, dedicated to supporting any cause for agriculture. He was a Soil Conservation District board member, an Emery County Weed Board member and was president of the Huntington-Cleveland Irrigation Company. He only recognized his disability as a minor inconvenience as he eagerly accepted responsibilities in areas where he felt he could give back to agriculture what agriculture had given him. He thirsted after knowledge and was happy to share his learned experiences. He always said he wanted to be remembered as a Good Farmer. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served on a mission in Chile/Argentina.
Fishing was very nearly an obsession and Richard lamented the fact that he could no longer backpack and hunt as he once did. He especially loved his family and spending time with them.
He is survived by his wife, Pat; sons Kenny (Ellen) and John: granddaughter Paige Elizabeth; mother and father Nalda and Russell Hardman; sisters Alice (David) Black, Mary Catherine (Raymond) Hildreth, Roberta (Steve Wolsey), Patricia (Bruno) Coons; brothers Allen and Keith (Annelle) Snowball, and many other dear family members and friends. His father Peart, preceded him in death.
Graveside services will be held June 4 at Noon at the Elmo Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Hazel Jeffs Strong
CASTLE DALE-Our beloved Hazel Jeffs Strong, 88, returned to Heavenly Father June 1, 2003 at the Emery County Care Center in Ferron. She was born April 21, 1915 in Castle Dale to Ethel Livingston and George Nephi Jeffs. She married Chester T. Strong on Nov. 21, 1936, and later divorced.
She had a great love of animals, cats, dogs and birds and also loved sharing photos she had taken of her friends and family. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She is survived by her son Harold C. (Pauline) Strong of Castle Dale, and a daughter Sandra Dalene Taylor of Cedar City; six grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; a brother Clive L. (Maretta) Jeffs of St. George and a sister Enid (Glenn L.) Cox of Salt Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Kirk.
Friends may call for a visitation at the Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale June 3 from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Castle Dale Stake Center on June 4 at 11 a.m. with a viewing one hour prior. Interment will follow in the Castle Dale Cemetery.
Wanda Shaw
“Together Again”
PRICE-Our beloved Wanda Irene Marsing Shaw, age 80, passed away June 2, 2003 in Price. She was born July 7, 1922 in Rains, Ut. to Lon and LaVern Tidwell Marsing. She married Garald C. Shaw Oct. 14, 1939 in Wellington and they were sealed together in the Manti Temple Oct. 14, 1998. Wanda enjoyed traveling with her husband, camping, sewing, working with her hands, and working with children both in her nursing career and as a primary teacher in Wattis. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and family. She was a life member of the Utah LPN Association and was a member of the LDS Church where she served in Primary and other callings.
She is survived by her son Alan Leroy (Virginia) Shaw of Price. Also her grandchildren Dennis (Dixie) Nichols, Irene (Randy) Everett, Darla Nichols, Marvin (Debra) Shaw, Sue (Randy) Perri, Kim (Bryan) Parry and Flint Shaw. Also 25 great-grandchildren and ten and a half great-great-grandchildren and a brother Dan (Bonnie) Marsing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter Garaldine Nichols, and a son Harold James Shaw.
Friends may call for a visitation at the Fausett Mortuary in Price, June 5 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Price North Stake Center June 6 at 11 a.m. with a viewing an hour prior to services. Interment will follow in the Price City Cemetery.
